How concrete quantities are calculated

Wet volume is length × width × thickness. Because dry cement, sand and aggregate contain voids that close on mixing and compaction, the wet volume is multiplied by 1.54 to get dry volume. That dry volume is divided in the nominal mix proportion of the selected grade; the cement share is converted to bags at a bulk density of 1,440 kg/m³ (50 kg per bag), and water is derived from the grade's water–cement ratio.
